How To Downsize Your Belongings And Get Organized

Over the years, many of us acquire more belongings than we realize. Go through any closet in your home and you’ll probably find several things you could donate, sell, or toss out; it’s just a matter of taking the time to do it.

When we hear the word “downsize”, we usually associate it with selling a home in order to move into a smaller one, but that’s not the only reason to pare down your belongings. There’s a lot more to it than just making room; it can also help you get organized, declutter, and have a positive effect on your mental health.

If your home is large–or if you find that you have many more belongings than you thought–it may be a big job that requires planning, several days worth of work, and/or help from friends and family. In order to prevent becoming overwhelmed, it’s a good idea to go through each room and write down the things that need your attention first. Making a list will help you get organized and help keep stress at bay. Keep reading for more tips on how to get started.

Pare down your media collection

If you collect movies or have a large amount of books, CDs, or albums, consider condensing them by sorting them into piles: keep, sell, donate. This is a great way to make some extra money and give back to the community, as you can check with your local library or shelter to see if they might benefit from some of your collection. It may be difficult at first to think about parting with things you’ve been accumulating for years, but today’s technology will allow you to replace just about anything you want via streaming service or apps, and the local library will help out, too.

Clean out your closets

Closet space is the one area of your home that you can’t ignore when it comes to downsizing, but it can be beneficial in many ways. Not only can you donate old or unused items to individuals who can use them, it’s a chance to make room for the next season’s clothing, especially when it comes to your kids.

Get organized

Getting your home more organized can mean a lot of things, so sit down and think of the best ways you can make your house work for you. What needs your attention first? Do you have an overflowing desk that could use a day of filing? Toy bins that are spilling out into bedrooms? Make a deal with your kiddos that for every five toys they keep from a pile, they donate one. Giving them the power to make this decision will help them feel more in control and will give them a sense of responsibility. For more tips on how to help your kids declutter, read on here.

Ask for help

When faced with a huge task like downsizing, it’s important to remember that you can always ask for help, either from your friends and family or from a professional. If you’re on a budget, you may want to do some price shopping; if you’re in the Dallas area, you’re looking at spending between $400 – $912 to hire a professional organizer.

Downsizing can be a great way to get your home in good shape, which can significantly improve your mood. Talk to your family members to get everyone on the same page so you can have help and keep from becoming overwhelmed.
