Common North Texas Pests and How You Can Prevent Them

Are you Bugging out in DFW?!

Common North Texas Pests and How You Can Prevent Them:

Have you ever been sound asleep when suddenly you are woken in a state of complete panic because ROACHES are crawling all over you?  I’m willing to bet you just cringed at the very thought. Roaches are up there with clowns, public speaking and zombies of top fears and this childhood experience certainly stands to reason why Big Texas Home Buyers’ founder, Heather Faires has a healthy dislike of the buggies (especially the winged ones). Yes, you read that right. She woke up to roaches crawling all over her as child, incidentally in a home that her step father was rehabbing. The mission now is to ensure that other innocent people never succumb to the same fate. We are here to help. We will be looking at some of the most common insects you will find in and around your home as well as the best way to handle them without bugging out (teehee).

Roaches: First, let’s dispel the rumor about roaches…. finding roaches is not a sign that your house is dirty! Roaches are clever little buggers that are masters at finding food and water without much issue. So then how does one gain these free loading roommates? Roaches will make their way into your home by way of cracks and holes in the building, openings around doors and windows, moving from one apartment to the next via shared walls. Trust and believe if there is a way they will find it.

Prevention and Eradication:

  • Seal cracks and holes
  • Keep your counter tops and floors clean of grease and food
  • Repair any plumbing leaks
  • Toss the Amazon Prime boxes you’ve been hoarding
  • Try natural DIY roach bait such as the ones Mother Nature Network recommends; Mix three parts boric acid with one part powdered sugar. The sugar lures the roaches, while the boric acid kills them. Although the boric acid isn’t toxic to people or pets, it can be irritating so keep it away from counters and places where little fingers and noses can reach. Sprinkle it under and behind the refrigerator, stove and dishwasher, under the sink, and into cracks along the edges of cabinets and pantries.
  • MNN also suggests spraying soapy water on them rather than using a toxic spray. The soap causes the roach to suffocate…. or you could always step on them.

Common North Texas Pests don’t stop with Roaches.

Bedbugs: Welp, if you thought cockroaches were bad I have news for you, they are nothing compared to bed bugs. How do I put this in the simplest of terms…they are BLOOD SUCKING VAMPIRES. Yes, you read that correctly they are vampire bugs who prefer to feed on human blood. They can cause skin rashes, psychological effects and allergic symptoms. Have you ever watched Criminal Minds? Basically, if Eddie the Bed Bug were human he would be on Criminal Minds sucking dry the blood and souls of his victims before being caught by the BAU. Few other interesting facts, they tolerate incest and withstand the effects of inbreeding quite well. They also smell like rotting raspberries. Their mating rituals are just as disturbing as everything else you’ve read about them but I’ll let you check out that out yourself.

Prevention and Eradication:

  • Buy a bed bug detector.
  • Burn your house down, change your name and move to another country. (The author of this post suggests you call a professional before taking matters into your own hands)

P.S. You know who eats bed bugs? Roaches.

Yellow Jacket Wasps: I like to think that every creation on this earth serves a purpose, except for the above bed bug, and I was curious to research the usefulness of Yellow Jackets after my recent terrifyingly unpleasant run in with a nest outside my back door. As it turns out they do in fact have a purpose and aren’t just complete jerks.  Yellow Jackets appear in droves primarily during the hottest months of summer and feed their young caterpillars, flies and spiders making them fantastic in ridding garden pests.

Prevention, Eradication and Random Tidbits:

  • Yellow Jackets feed off sugary foods and drinks so beware of foods you have lying around after gatherings, garbage cans or fruit bearing plants.
  • They will build nests in places like logs or man-made structures such as the light fixture directly outside my back door.
  • Only females sting and (allegedly) only when provoked
  • Diet soda drinkers are in luck, Yellow Jackets aren’t about the aspartame life, so you’ll be able to drink in peace
  • To get rid of them you can either wait them out through the summer or use sprays available that will treat the entire nest.
